Performance Riverside

Outlook

Performance Riverside is holding open call auditions for professional non-union performers for the upcoming production of Gilbert and Sullivan's delightful musical comedy, "The Mikado" on Sunday, September 25th at 6pm in the Landis Performing Arts Center. The production is directed by Performance Riverside's Producing Artistic Director Matt Neves, choreographed by Val Rachelle, with music direction by Scott Smith. Please prepare 16 bars in the style of the show - songs from the show are acceptable. Bring sheet music for the accompanist. No a cappella please. Wear clothing and foot ware appropriate for movement. All persons who audition must bring a resume/headshot.

Currently Casting for:

The Mikado of Japan- (Bass) A benevolent dictator who alternates severe punishment with fatherly love.

Katisha- (Contralto) The daughter-in-law elect of The Mikado is a plain, middle-aged spinster, bitter with frustration, yet not without a softer, sentimental side.

Nanki-Poo- (Tenor) The Heir Apparent in disguise, in love with Yum-Yum. Charming young man, if a bit thoughtlessly affable.

Pish-Tush- (Baritone) A dignified, disdainful, noble lord.

Pooh-Bah- (Bass-Baritone) An opportunistic, unprincipled man of rank; a pompous, hypocritical snob. Accepts bribes from anyone.

Ko-Ko- (Light baritone) A cheap tailor, bewildered and frightened at his sudden rise to exalted rank. Quick to panic and jump to conclusions, but skirts disaster by wriggling out of awkward situations. Neither brave, nor cowardly, a nimble, lovable comic character.

Yum-Yum– (Soprano), Pitti-Sing and Peep-Bo - (Mezzo Soprano). Three sisters – Wards of Ko-Ko, the “Three little maids from school." To be played with bright-eyed charm and graceful movement.

Chorus: Strong legitimate singers with good comedic skills capable of highly stylized, graceful movement.

PERFORMANCE RIVERSIDE OPENS 2011-2012 SEASON WITH A RIP-ROARING PRODUCTION OF OKLAHOMA!

Performance Riverside is proud to open its 2011-2012 season with a landmark show that has defined American musical theatre since its debut close to 70 years ago, Oklahoma!   Rodgers & Hammerstein’s first collaboration rewrote the rule book of musical theater by using bright, evocative, bold music, lyrics and dance to propelled its plot and enrich its characters.  Set in the Oklahoma territory just after the turn of the century, the high-spirited rivalry between the local farmers and cowboys provides a colorful background against which Curly, a handsome cowboy, and Laurey, a winsome farm girl, find love and start a new life together in a brand-new state. The show is under the skilled direction of Performance Riverside’s new Producing Artistic Director Matt Neves, with choreography by Val Rachelle and musical direction by Scott Smith.

“What strikes me is how this iconic piece is so firmly rooted in universal themes,” says Neves. “Over one hundred years ago these people braved hardship and immigrated into a wilderness that was not yet fully part of the United States for the chance to build new lives.  These were outsiders and iconoclasts who came together to create a new culture in a new place. Aunt Eller and Laurey, for example, are strong pioneer women who run a successful farm at the edge of civilization. That’s remarkable even in this day and age, and very relatable. Oklahoma! is about more than corn, surreys, and beautiful mornings.  It’s about finding a bright, new perspective among life’s daily challenges and how true love blossoms, even under the harshest conditions.”

Bryan Vickery, a veteran of the Glendale Centre Theatre and South Coast Repertory plays Curly, the role that made a star out of Hugh Jackman in the 1999 West End production.  Patricia Scarborough, one of the founding members of Performance Riverside and the Mission Inn Dinner Theatre, plays Aunt Eller, the sharp, pragmatic, and determined matriarch whose livelihood is threatened by encroachment of the growing cattle interests. Also features are Travis Cox as Ali Hakim, Casey Garritano as Will Parker, Chelsea Franko as Ado Annie, Paul Kehler as Jud Fry, and an ensemble including Jason Wesley Green, Heather Biede, Aaron Milligan, Anna Hightower, Deanna Ott, Emily Young, Hannah Wolgemuth, James McGrath, Jarred Barnard, Julie Davis, Kami Martin-Crump, Keenon Hooks, Lucas Moore, Michael Milligan, Michael Rodriguez, Russell Currington, and Ryann Clover.
