The Rotary Foundation

Mission Statement

The mission of The Rotary Foundation is to enable Rotarians to advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace through the improvement of health, the support of education, and the alleviation of poverty.

The Foundation is a not-for-profit corporation supported solely by voluntary contributions from Rotarians and friends of the Foundation who share its vision of a better world. 100.% of your contribution is used for Foundation Programs.

Programs of the
Rotary Foundation

Through Foundation grants and programs, Rotarians and other contributors can help change the world. They can finance a well for a village that lacks clean water, improve the environment, or provide scholarships to educate the next generation. The grants and programs available to Rotarians allow them to realize Rotary’s humanitarian mission throughout the world, including its number-one goal of eradicating polio.

Polio Plus program

Polio Plus, the most ambitious program in Rotary’s history, is the volunteer arm of the global partnership dedicated to eradicating polio. For more than 20 years, Rotary has led the private sector in the global effort to rid the world of this crippling disease. Today, Polio Plus and its role in the initiative is recognized worldwide as a model of public-private cooperation in pursuit of a humanitarian goal.

In addition to providing financial and volunteer support, Rotary works to urge support from other public and private sector partners. This includes the campaign to End Polio Now, inspired by the extraordinary challenge grants received from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

Educational Programs

Students and Youth

Rotary's programs for students and youth can change the lives of those who participate. Through these programs, young people can earn scholarships, travel on cultural exchanges, or help a community through a service project.

GSE

The Group Study Exchange (GSE) program of The Rotary Foundation is a unique cultural and vocational exchange opportunity for young business and professional men and women between the ages of 25 and 40 (does not apply to Rotarian Team Leader) and in the early years of their professional lives. The GSE program provides travel grants for team members to experience the host country's institutions and ways of life, observe their own vocations as practiced abroad, develop personal and professional relationships, and exchange ideas. The Rotary Foundation provides round-trip air travel and the host Rotarians provide for meals, lodging, and in-country group travel.

Ambassadorial Scholars

The Foundation sponsors one of the largest international scholarship programs in the world. Scholars study in a different country, where they serve as unofficial ambassadors of goodwill. Since 1947, more than 47,000 scholars from 110 countries have received scholarships of more than $476 million through The Rotary Foundation.

The purpose of these Ambassadorial Scholarships is to further international understanding and friendly relations among people of different countries and geographical areas. The program sponsors several types of scholarships for undergraduate and graduate students as well as for qualified professionals pursuing vocational studies. While abroad, scholars serve as goodwill ambassadors to the host country and give presentations about their homelands to Rotary clubs and other groups. Upon returning home, scholars share with Rotarians and others the experiences that led to a greater understanding of their host country.

Applicants apply for Ambassadorial Scholarships through their local Rotary club.  Deadlines range between March and August, of the year prior to the scholarship.

Grants for University Teachers

Purpose: The Grants for Higher Education Teachers program blends two of Rotary’s most important emphases education and volunteer service. The primary purpose is to further international understanding and friendship while strengthening higher education in low-income countries. Low-income countries are defined in terms of per capita GNP.

If you want more information on the Grants for Higher Education Teachers Program, go to the relevant section on the Rotary International website.
